Quick guide

How to Use the ESP Component Registry in ESP-IDF

Starting with ESP-IDF v4.4 and established in v5.x+, Espressif adopted a modular package architecture managed by the IDF Component Manager. Forget complex git submodules: declare libraries in your project's idf_component.yml manifest file.

  • Automatic and Decoupled Installation

The build system downloads, compiles, and manages library versions automatically during 'idf.py build' or 'idf.py reconfigure'.

  • Strict Semantic Versioning

Control exactly when to update using version operators (^ for minor compatibility, ~ for patches, or exact fixed versions).

  • Lighter and Cleaner Projects

Your project repository stays clean, without embedding third-party code in your Git history.

  • Enterprise or Community Sharing

Publish your own components to the public Espressif cloud registry or your company's private internal registries.

Essential commands

  • $ idf.py add-dependency "espressif/esp_lvgl_port^2.4.0"

Automatically creates or updates the 'main/idf_component.yml' file by adding the specified dependency.

  • $ idf.py reconfigure

Forces CMake and Component Manager to re-resolve the dependency tree and download pending packages.

  • $ compote component upload --name my_sensor_driver --namespace myteam

Publishes your open-source or proprietary component to the ESP Component Registry using the official Compote CLI tool.

Semantic versioning in ESP-IDF

  • ^1.2.0: accepts minor updates and bug fixes (1.2.1, 1.3.0), but blocks breaking API changes (2.0.0). Recommended.
  • ~1.2.0: accepts patch releases only (1.2.1, 1.2.5).
  • 1.2.0: locks to this exact version.
  • *: accepts any version. Avoid in production.
